What Is The Difference Between A Tesla Coil And A Van De Graaff Generator?
I've played around with a Van de Graaff generator before in the special projects program at my school and I've seen a Tesla Coil in action at the McWane Center in Birmingham, AL. I know about the inner working of the Van de Graaff gen. Rubber belt, copper wire, steel ball, motor. Easy enough. But what about a Tesla Coil? Our school doesn't have one of those laying around for us to mess with (our science classes are very general) and I just want to know. Please don't copy something from Wikipedia. I hate that. Would someone who knows what they're talking about explain it?

By the way, I don't have a project or anything, I just love science but biology is boring me to death. This question came to me while I was watching some Tesla Coil videos on Youtube.
A VanDeGraff generator produces a high voltage static charge. A Tesla coil produces high voltage alternating current (in the range of several 10 kHz to several 100 kHz). When you charge and discharge a VanDeGraff dome, it is a one-time deal -- one big spark. Discharge "sparks" from a Tesla coil is continuous (so long as the power is applied).
A Tesla coil (also Teslacoil) is a type of resonant transformer, whereas a Van De Graaff Generator is an Electrostatic Generator. One uses AC power, the other uses DC power. Van de graaff as you say has a motor and belt it creates static electricity much the same as walking across a carpet.
Tesla is a very large step up transformer usually like an automotive coil but can be much larger. The frequency is generally higher also. I have seen large Tesla coils that can produce millions of volts with arcs up to three feet. This can cause radio interference in the whole neighbor possibly even noise on telephone lines.

Previous answers all valid. Before spending the money you did I would have done a compression and timing check.
Is the noise from the engine or more under the car?
Don't change parts on spec. As someone else advised, get a qualified friend/mechanic to look at your problem otherwise you could be throwing your money away!
