Car Radar Fundamentals

To understand how radar detectors work, you must first know what they are discovered. The concept of measuring vehicle speed with radar is very simple. A basic speed gun is only a radio transmitter and receiver combined in one device. A radio transmitter is a device that an electrical current when the voltage rises and falls oscillates at a specific frequency. This current generates electromagnetic energy, and when the power fluctuates, the energy flows through the air as an electromagnetic wave. Radar can also be used to measure the speed of an object by a phenomenon called the Doppler effect. Multiplying this time by the speed of light determines the LIDAR system, as the object is. Contrary to traditional police radar, lidar does not measure the change in the frequency of the wave. Instead, he sends many infrared laser bursts in a short time at several distances to collect. By comparing these different distance samples, the system can calculate how fast the car is moving. How does the State Trooper's radar system, to catch speeders, work?

How does it work? What are the limitations? How far is the range?

It sends out a signal in the microwave frequency range (24 GHz to 36 GHz); when the signal returns, the receiver measures the frequency shift (Doppler shift) and calculates the speed of the target based on that frequency shift. That calculation is then displayed on the radar unit.

They are good only in straight lines - just like microwave transmission systems. They are NOT affected by gravity, any more than light or other electromagnetic radiation is affected by gravity. If you're using one on a clear day with no interference, you could probably determine the speed of a vehicle 1000+ yards away no problem. That range is reduced with rain or other obstructions (vegetation, etc...) although not completely eliminated. Heavy rain might reduce the range to 100 yds... the normal range in use is probably 25 to 200 yards or so, depending on the officer's training and ability.

In using one, the officer has to know which vehicle is the target, as the antenna emits the signal in a cone-shaped pattern. In that sense, it could pick up any number of cars, but the filters and microprocessors in the system - coupled with the officer's training - essentially eliminate that as a defense.

They also have the capabilities to measure speed of moving vehicles while you're moving (subtracting or adding your speed as appropriate), based on the noise level (Doppler shift again) of the signals being bounced off the road and returned to you. So they can get you while you're coming towards them, going away, while they're moving or sitting still, from either the back or the front.
