How to Unfreeze a Frozen Car Lock

Frozen car locks are a common issue faced during winter in extreme climatic condition. How does the car lock become frozen? Any moisture that is present in the car door lock freezes and it becomes difficult to open the lock. Sometimes it won't budge even after trying for a long time. This becomes a big frustration due to the loss of time it would be causing to your schedules.

The first thing to remember is not to panic and frustrated. There are simple ways to unfreeze a frozen car lock. Firstly try all doors before you take any other step. Sometimes any one of the door might luckily open up. If it doesn't then you can use a de-icer. If you are living in an extreme climate area, then you should sure think about having one in your garage. The de-icer has an aerosol nozzle, put the nozzle into the car lock and squeeze it. The de-icer works on the ice and you can easily open the door. Make sure that you never store the de-icer in your car.

If you do not have a de-icer, then get a lighter and heat up your car key. Make it very hot and insert it into the lock. Do it a few times and consecutively keep trying to open the key. The door will ultimately open up after a few tries. Applying a little of petroleum jelly will also help open the door. Apply petroleum jelly on the car key liberally and allow it into the lock and try opening. Keep trying till the door opens. Lighter and petroleum jelly are most likely items to be found at your home. You can even try with a hair dryer by plugging in the nozzle of the hair dryer into the lock and letting in hot air. This will unfreeze the lock and you can open it easily.

So, the next time your car lock freezes, use any of these methods and open you car without panicking. Be sure to prepare your car for winter and store your summer tyres correctly, that is how you prevent problems with your car during winter.
