Neodymium rare earth magnets are permanent magnets

Neodymium rare earth magnets are permanent magnets made from an alloy of iron, boron and neodymium. This compound is also designated as NdFeB. It was created in 1982 in order to provide an alternative to samarium cobalt magnets. Magnets made from this alloy are the strongest type of rare earth magnet.

Neodymium magnets are known for their high remanence and energy product. This means that their magnetic fields are stronger and denser than those of other magnets. These magnets also have a high coercivity, which means that they strongly resist demagnetization. They outperform samarium cobalt magnets in a number of areas. But they do have a very low Curie temperature and thus lose their magnetism at lower temperatures than the samarium cobalt models.

There are two methods for making neodymium rare earth magnets: the sintered magnet process and the bonded magnet process. Sintered magnets are made by crushing the compound into a powder and heating it until the particles stick to each other. Most sintered magnets are produced in either China or Japan. One weakness of sintered magnets is that they are susceptible to corrosion. This weakness has been successfully addressed by applying a protective coating made from nickel or copper to the surface of the magnets. Bonded magnets are created using a process known as melt spinning, which involves the rapid cooling and solidification of a liquid ribbon of the NdFeB compound. The end product of this process evinces a smaller amount of eddy current loss. It can also be formed into very fine shapes. This ability makes it very useful in smaller devices.

The great power of these magnets is accompanied by some dangers as well. Even small magnets made of the NdFeB compound can cause injury if fingers or other small body parts are caught between two of them. In certain cases, these powerful magnets have even broken bones. There have been circumstances in which small children swallowed these magnets and suffered injury to their digestive tracts. Unfortunately, death has sometimes been the result in such situations.

Neodymium rare earth magnets are used in the manufacture of many products because of their utility and power. These magnets have gone hand in hand with the technological advances, which have permitted the creation of smaller and smaller devices. While the samarium cobalt magnet is still produced in great quantity, neodymium magnets have shown great superiority over all competitors.
