Best way to extract THC?
I'm having an argument with another chemical engineer about the best way to extract THC from its usual plant source, and we're willing to put it up here to let the rest of you chime in. My version, which is totally untested, is a soxhlet extractor using acetone coupled with a rotavap to gently remove the solvent. Since acetone has a boiling point of 56C and a very high solubilty product (THC in acetone) I think that would be the most efficient way to do it. My coworker says that you would contaminate the extract, and should use pure ethanol (or 95% pure) in a vacuum filtration system. We both somewhat remember that THC thermally degrades at like 70C, so we're trying to maximize efficiency. Anybody have any thoughts? Oh, and neither one of us does drugs, but we're waiting for a reaction to hit equilibrium and started trading stories from grad school. This is how we amuse ourselves.
Best way as in most effective or most efficient? I know you like chemistry so you might be disapointed to hear the commonly used method: cheese-cloth.
Its a multi-step crushing and filtering process. Yeah, there's going to be an obvious loss, but I do think contamination would be a big problem with either of the chemical reaction alternatives.
Here's another approach, could you vaporize the THC (~45C) and then collect the vaporized gas and somehow cool and collect the molecules?.
