Why does my moms toyota die when you take the air intake hose off of the carb.?
She has a toyota corolla 06 Sport when it is running I thought ir would run better if you took the air intake hose off that runs from the carb to the filter box but immediatly after i removed the hose the car dies but if you put the hose back on it starts up again i dont get it how am I supposed to put a cold air intake on it if it dies right after you take the hose off
Adding to Nigel's answer: when you removed the hose from the throttle body (proper term) you stopped all air from flowing through the mass air flow sensor and caused the computer to think the engine wasn't drawing in any air so it stopped injecting fuel and lack of fuel being injected caused the engine to stall.
An aftermarket cold air intake kit would include an adapter to install the mass air sensor on the new intake but you CAN NOT "redneck" this as if the air flowing through the sensor is any more or any less turbulent that it would have been with the stock airbox the computer will "see" either too much or not enough air being drawn in and either cause the engine to run too rich or too lean and probably store a fault code, light up the MIL (check engine light), and go into a fail safe mode that will likely leave the engine running rough and with even less horsepower than it had stock.
In other words, don't touch it yourself. If you just have to have a CAI installed have it professionally done by a competent shop.
