Various Bearing Housings
A bearing housing is a pedestal used to provide support for a rotating shaft with the help of compatible bearings and various accessories. It is also called a plummer block or pillow block.
It can be made of different kinds of materials. Typically, it can be made of cast iron or pressed steel. Large bearing housings are usually made of grey cast iron. However various different grades of metals can be used to manufacture the same. Small and low-cost housings are die-cast in zinc or aluminum alloys.
Generally, pillow blocks are usually mounted in cleaner environments and are meant for lesser loads of general industry. These differ from "plummer blocks" which are bearing housings supplied without any bearings and are usually meant for higher load ratings and corrosive industrial environments.
In addition to the manufacturing materials, housing categories are also various. Industrial bearing housing are usually referred to the housings which have a bearing fitted into them, thus the user need not purchase bearings separately. While center bearing housings are usually referred to housings which have a bearing fitted into them, thus the user need not purchase the bearings separately.
A plain-bearing housing has a two-part housing of which at least the lower part is provided with cooling ribs in horizontal rows whose ribs are mutually staggered. Distinct rib registers can also be provided on the upper housing part. The result is an improved dissipation of heat from a plain bearing of a shaft journeyed in this housing.
The two-part housing can comprise a lower housing part and an upper housing part which can be connected to the lower housing part along a junction which generally extends through the opening defined by the two housing parts and through which the shaft projects. In general the housings are provided with ribs to promote dissipation of heat, i.e. cooling. Such housings may be upright stationary journals or plain- bearing housings or flange plain- bearing housings.
Wheel bearing housing is also widely applied which is used for suspending a wheel of a vehicle. The wheel, mounted at the wheel bearing housing, is provided with a brake device. In order to create a wheel suspension device which has devices for guiding air that are provided at low construction costs, it is provided that the outside of the wheel bearing housing is formed at least regionally as an air-guiding element.
